On The "white Whale" Implication Level System

American Author's Moby-Dick, or, the Whale, which is published in middle of the 19th century, being considered as one of the ten most famous classic works in west world now, was suffered much from condemnations and scoldings in history. The novel tells that a whaling ship Pequod leading by a monomaniacal captain Ahab, chase up a white sperm whale-Moby Dick, which is Ahab's personal emeny, and is called the white whale for its extraordinary white color. The novel is full of implication and symbols, as well as records true technical details in sperm whale fishery. There's heartquake plot in description on everyday's life. The whaling ship sunk at last, all crew died but one. The whale went back ocean. Only the narrator "I" Ishmael, rescued by a life buoy which is made over a coffin of his friend.This grand work was much criticized after published. And Melville gave up gradually the carecr of a author. The author and the work being forgotten for many years before people pay attention to him again in the early 20th century. Critics found many themes in Moby-Dick. Some believed Moby-Dick is a realistic work, and some believed romantic, and more of them found diversified symbolic meanings in terms of the rich implications and complex symbols in Moby-Dick. Each of the numerous themes was educed from a partial side of the novel. They were chaotic, and some were opposed each other.There is limitation of method in the previous study on implicated meanings of literary works. Previous study method can by sorted as Single-meaning, Multi-meaning, or, as Designed-meaning, Interpreted-meaning, Content-noumenon. Each method sticks to his argument, is unable to hold the whole of implicated meanings of a literary work. The implicated meanings is structure imbeded deep in text. There is intrinsic complexity and intrinsic levelled framework in the implicated meanings of text. Accordingly, New method on implicated meanings introduced in this dissertation, anticipated to hold the implicated meaning system of Moby-Dick by full-scale and integrity.In text analysis of this dissertation, implicated meanings of the work deducted over 12 levels: story plot, scenes and atmosphere, artistic life beauty, technical history, nature of whaling, symbol of American spirit, wealth and possession in west world, intrinsic conflict in American mind, puzzle of fate, choice of soul, ecological apocalypse, a salvation for western civilization. Nevertheless, what described in this dissertation's criticizing practice part is still a limited levelled system of implicated meanings.According to the new point of view of the new method on implicated meanings, a implicated meaning system should be open and unlimited, and it will be riched and expanded in the history of literary acceptation. Thus, the implicated meaning system of Moby-dick will be uncompleted forever, waiting for readers' supply when time elapsing.
