A large number of works representing the church life (approved or criticized), religious sentiment or Christian subjects were produced by most of the modern Chinese writers, who, during their overseas study, deeply sunk in Christian culture and affected by Christianity, directly or indirectly. While perhaps not being necessarily significant in the history of modern Chinese literature, these works constituted a unique religious literature world, reflecting wide influence of the Christian culture on modern Chinese literature. The Christianity definitely indicated the link between modern literature and Christian culture, whether it was embodied in the May 4th literature enlighten and in the writing against colonialism between 1920s and 1930s.In the period that the May 4th Movement had taken place, modern Chinese writers universally accepted the Christian culture with freedom, equality and caritas as its spiritual core but made thorough criticism upon the hypocrisy of the church. At the same time, the basic features of their Christian consciousness were the secularization and moralization of the religious concept and pursuing self value, so that they generally treated a Christian as a human, not prostrated as God and paid attention to caritas, humanism, redemption and personality including in Christianity when overlooking its revival, holy spirit and holy things etc. However, due to the difference in the eastern and western culture, the absorbing of Christian culture would inevitably produce a series of conflict and mixture. As a final result, Christianity greatly influenced the Chinese literature, which enriched its content and language and changed the writers' direction in the seeking of life value in their works.
