The period from pre-history to Qin Dynasty and Han Dynasty was a relative integrate time that Chinese ancient cooking utensils design appeared, developed and reached its maturity. In this period, cooking utensils took two main forms of the pottery-made and the metal-made. The design of cooking utensils received influence from many factors, such as policy, economy, culture, technology and lifestyle. The types and configurations of cooking utensils were changing from simplification to diversification; the structure and usage mode of them were tending towards perfection so as to suffice people's requirements under the domination of laws of their own development. As the implement with function base, the idea of usage-oriented was running through the whole course in which the design of cooking utensils had been developing. And the design was attaining a harmonious blend of utility and taste, function and configuration along with steadily improving of people's living standard. On the other hand, many excellent theories of design contained in ancient cooking utensils can still bring great inspirations to modern design.
