The research of pragmatic failure in cross-cultural communication has become an issue of important theoretical significance and realistic value in the contemporary linguistic study. For this reason, the thesis has made an exploration on the issue of pragmatic failure in the cross-cultural communication in order to make the discussion in a systematic, theoretical and scientific way. The thesis constructs the frame from 5 aspects:Chapter 1 discusses culture and cross-cultural communication. Chapter 2 illustrates the expressing forms of verbal pragmatic failure in the cross-cultural communication. Chapter 3 explains the expressing forms of nonverbal pragmatic failure in the cross-cultural communication. Chapter 4 analyzes the reasons of pragmatic failure in the cross-cultural communication. Chapter 5 deals with precaution strategies of pragmatic failure in the cross-cultural communication. As a whole, the system of intercultural communicative competence includes the system of basic communicative competence, the effective and relation competence system, episodic competence system and strategy competence system. It can be cultivated by four major factors: attitude, knowledge, skill and education; by four levels: familiarization, understanding, accurate evaluation and flexible measures; and also by four approaches: leading role of language teacher in the classroom (explicit and implicit culture teaching); extensive reading of students after school; taking full advantage of foreign teacher resource; strengthening cultivation of subject cultural consciousness.
