This thesis is to study Violetta, the leading soprano in Verdi's opera LaTraviata, from different aspects such as themes, bankground times, musical characteristics and singing treatment, so as to explore how Verdi, created this important character successfully.In the opera, music, drama, literature, singing and orchstra get along so harmoniously that a complicated figure, combing the image of love .degeneration and lofty, has been wonderfully portayed. By using comparison and analysis of Violetta and cio-cio-san in Madema Butterfly, we can form a clearer picture of varieties of Violetta's living soul. Firstly, study the opera full score and different singing editions in order to know better how the leading lady, ith sophisticated psychology, displays his artistic emotions and meeting with different people. Secondly inquire into the application of singing skills to particular music works and to particular characters in opera. Thirdly, expound how different singing methods and skillful singing treatment may affect the creation of the same figure on the same dramatic scene.By comparison and analysis, we can see more and better about Verdi's attitudestowards art ,love, life and the influence on works and thoughts of artist in the givenperiod to search for the nature of Italian opera of 19th century and the development ofvocal music reflected by this century-personage .
