The illustration is a kind of plastic arts. It originates from writing and accompanies the growth of books. It is the outcome of the combination of literature and fine arts, and it is an art melted with writing and drawing. It embodies both the subordination to the contents of books and the relative independence of arts. Therefore, right after its birth, with the preponderance of the visual image, it adds luster to the books, wins the great fondness and appreciation from people, and becomes one of the most popularized and fashionable forms of plastic arts.This article is trying to, from the humanity and technical angles, make a contrast between the East and the West in regional differences and national characteristics. From the point of historical development, based on the creation of book illustration, the artistic attempts mainly to comb and analyze the relationships among illustrations with culture, literature, sketch , format in printing, artistic language, key constituents, rhythm, EXLIBRIS, and the techniques of digital control on computer. For the final goal, it intends to offer some actual experience to the readers from visual functions of the sketches and colors-which is an essential element to the illustration.Meanwhile, with continuous exploration and study of the history of illustration both in China and throughout the world, and in its application realm, we could see the relationships between illustrations and writings. Those illustrations seem like musical symbols which are able to bring rhythm and impression to the readers. Moreover, in the artistic way, EXLIBRIS and illustrations bear the same qualities in artistic skills, intensive attraction, their dependence on books and their peculiarity from other art forms, as both of them aim at the service for books as their utmost goals.
