A China PRC item of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians iscompiled by thirteen western and Chinese musicologists. This item seems as a simpleChinese musical historical literature. The musical historiography view in this item is ahistorical one of diverse cultures. Based on positive researches, it takes theintergradations of the theories of many subjects in a logical analysis. The whole structureof this term consists of four clues: first, it analyzes Chinese music from the spacedimensionality of geography surroundings. Second, it analyzes Chinese music from thetime dimensionality of historical development. Third, it analyzes the historical culture ofChinese musical instrument. Forth, it observes Chinese musical culture from living folkmusical traditions. It broke up the traditional writing method of Chinese musical historythat is based on Periodization. It considered that the space (region culture) and the time(historical culture) are same important, and they are setting up the comprehensive viewof Chinese musical history. It also broke up the structure that is based on literaturehistory. For a key point, this item has a great deal of realistic materials got by fieldresearch with adopting the ethnomusicology's method. And, a characteristic of the itemis to observe the survival and developing status of Chinese musicians and musicalassociations from the view of the sociology of music. This article intend to sum up thecharacteristics about A China PRC item of The New Grove Dictionary of Music andMusicians from three points, and emphasize the highlight that the advantages in thepositive research that the western academe emphasized in their traditions are applied hereto explain the Chinese musical culture and to analyze the living folk musical traditions.
