Chinese authors have been using self-depreciatory form of language in their titles of articles and books since the ancient times, which has become an important part of the written language in modern Chinese. Academic thesis is a special type of argument style, self-depreciatory expressions appear in a large amount in the titles of Chinese academic theses. Now the industry of academic journals at home is faced with the developing trend of internationalization. For the international communication in the field academy mainly depends on English as the medium, the fact that titles of English theses do not contain self-depreciatory expressions may have a negative influence on the internationalization of academic sources at home. The purposes of this study are as follows: to make a systematic review of self-depreciatory titles in Chinese, to explain the confusion in the usage of self-depreciatory expressions in titles on the basis of former researches, and to reconsider the standardization of self-depreciatory expressions in terms of new aspect. The methodologies employed in the thesis are: investigation, observation, comparison, sample statistics and prediction, etc. In general, the thesis adopts the method of qualitative and quantitative research study together. The study will generalize the nature, characteristics of the phenomenon on the one hand;and on the other hand, it will explicate every fact by analyzing the statistics. There are four parts of innovations in this study: the study (1) specifies that self-depreciatory expressions in modern Chinese is a large phylum including various words, phrases and sentences instead of several ordinary phrases related to disputation (such as the expressions like "qiantan", "luelun", "xiaoyi" and "shiling" in Chinese). The study will also touch the variety of self-depreciatory expressions in Chinese titles and the pragmatic purposes hidden behind the expressions;(2) concludes various cognitions of the usage of self-depreciatory titles, by way of collecting and comparing the present study on self-depreciatoryexpressions;(3) introduces the field of practice in France, makes a discussion about the application of self-depreciatory expressions in titles, and then assures that the usage of self-depreciatory expressions stems from the self-deprecating habitus internalized in human cognition in long cultural tradition. So the application of self-depreciatory expressions in titles can be conscious or unconscious;(4) considers the standarization of self-depreciatory titles from the perspective of detachment and preservation between field and habitus. This thesis is the first attempt in China to analyze the standarization of self-depreciatory expressions of titles in modern Chinese, so there has been no present researches on the previous four parts, which are the innovations of the study. |
