In Dostoevsky's works the intricate voice and consciousness of characters isconsidered as the general idea of Bakhtin's polyphonic poetics, however in Proust'snovels the variation in narrative mode which is made up of shifting in point of viewis regarded as the foundation stone of Genette's polyphonic principle .Kundera'sconception that the generalization of kinds of styles all over the Broch's works isthe true meaning of polyphony is different from theirs and his composition isknown as the mature text of modern polyphonic fiction .The every step of thepoetics construction ,which is from " polyphony on voice "to" polyphony onnarrative mode ",then to" polyphony on style ",is closely related to thedevelopment of modernism .The literature of stream of consciousness, as one of the school ofmodernism ,sufficiently experiences the joy mixing together with polyphonicelements ,and enormously develops the depth of structure and the width of form byaccepting and absorbing them ,which is all expressed the distinctive quality of thethree works :the equal dialogue inquiring into the life philosophy which severalnarrative sounds of The Waves implied ,the arrangement of various narrativestrategies of The Sound and the Fury generated by the counterpoint of thesubjects ,the characters and the details ,and the achievement of multiplex dialogicalsituation of Ulysses comprising the characters ,the structures and the styles .In aword ,the appearance of polyphonic elements in them involves all sides of textcomposition ,that is to say ,the narrative perspective ,the narrative mode and thenarrative structure of the text are full of various kinds of dialogical forms . Thereexists in three dialogical forms in the narrative structure of the text . One of them isthe dialogue between exterior structure and interior structure resulting from thestruggle between consciousness and subconsciousness. The other lies in thedialogue between ancient world and modern world hidden by the mythic modeentering into the text. Besides, several narrative clues coexisting the sameproposition field develop the dialogue .In the narrative perspective ,the alternatesituation between objective focus and interior focus or among sorts of interiorfocus generated by the shifting of point of view reveals the existence ofdialogue .In the narrative mode ,the metonymic and metaphoric tendency oflingual mode presenting the same character and the same scene develops theatmosphere of dialogue . These polyphonic elements or dialogical forms , Thesepolyphonic elements or dialogical forms , together with their together with theirvariegated and coexisting forms announce the birth of splendid world ofpolyphonic art of the literature of stream of consciousness.Reviewing the study of polyphonic poetics ,most works are so absorbed in thetheory ,in particular of explaining the certain "polyphony"neglecting to look intothe others that it's inevitable to lack the overall comprehension of polyphonicpoetics and its evolutionary course .However ,as for the study of text onpolyphonic fiction involving the literature of stream of consciousness ,it largelystresses the analysis of polyphonic elements for one aspect of text withoutincluding the school of stream of consciousness .The purpose of the thesis is thatwe will discuss the polyphonic characteristics of typical text and demonstrate theapplicability between the literature of stream of consciousness and polyphonicfiction by revealing the evolutionary course of polyphony , then come toconclusion that polyphonic poetics has extensive applicability and developmentspace in modern fiction , especially the literature of stream of consciousness andadding the polyphonic elements to the text increases the artistic charm for itsoriginal composition .There are three parts in the thesis .ChapterⅠ:The remarks on polyphony .This part presents various polyphonyprinciple itself before Bakhtin's ,Genette's and Kundera's faces and reveals itsdynamic and historical evolutionary course and its abundant and deepenedtendency of theoretical connotation .Chapter Ⅱ: The polyphonic characteristics of the typical text of stream ofconsciousness .In this part ,we discuss the polyphonic characteristics of the threetypical text : The Waves, The Sound and the Fury and Ulysses .Chapter Ⅲ :The demonstration and appearance of the polyphoniccharacteristics of stream of consciousness . This part analyses the appearance ofpolyphonic elements which extend all over the every sides of text ,such as thenarrative perspective ,the narrative mode and the narrative structure bydemonstrating the applicability between the literature of stream of consciousnessand polyphonic fiction.
