The Han Dynasties were the zenith of the bronze mirror production. The Bo-Ju mirror is the very type which discloses the quintessence of the Han mirror. The reverse pattern is composed of Bo-Ju design cooperating with cloud like and geometrical designs and figures such as the tetra gods, auspicious animals, birds, winged gods, toads and octa-bird. The Bo-Ju mirrors have outstanding features which demonstrates the popularization of sorcery, astrology and prophecy. So the study on the Bo-Ju mirrors could play a key role in the research on the politics, economy, ideology, thoughts, culture, aesthetic tendency, traditional customs and fine arts in the Han Dynasty.As the two capitals in the Han Dynasty, Changan and Luoyang produce representative and typical Bo-Ju mirrors. Drawing on the data from the related archaeological reports, monographs and collection introductions and supported by the reached academic achievements, the author conducts a systematic and comprehensive exploration on the bronze mirrors from the two Han capitals. Through classifying the minors into different districts and stages, the writer concludes that the Bo-Ju mirror production was in prosperity from the late part of the Western Han Dynasty to the early part of the Eastern Han Dynasty and as the capitals of the Han Dynasties, Changan and Luoyang displayed their innovation and advancement in politics, economy and culture.The author also makes a deeper analysis on the nomination, origination, succession and development of the Bo-Ju mirrors. A detailed analysis and research is especially attributed to the Bo-Ju mirrors made in the Xinmang Interregnum, which occupied a pivotal place. The author also makes a superficial investigation into the popular date, progressing process and nomination of the simplified mirrors. The last question remains open for other scholars. |
