English word study is always the difficult part for students , because it is time and energy consuming. There are some strategies of memorizing English words: strategy of repeating phonegram word root and affix and associative compounds. Although campared with repeating method the latter strategies can greatly improve word learning , they are all explicit study , which require more attention . While implicit study is non - conscious study , which require less attention , thus can lessen learner' s biological and phychological burden. This research combines implicit study — generation effect — with explicit study (phonegram word root and affix and associative compounds)to improve English word momerizing. The subjects are divided into two groups , one applying explicit study and the other implicit and explicit combination study. Then they are given memorizing tests and the result shows that the memory of combination group is better than the explicit group in clue memorizing tests; while in random memorizing test, the memory of combination group is better than the explicit group only when the target words are comparatively easy ones.
