The thesis fixes eyes upon the essays of Taiwanese writer, Lung Yingtai. Based on her own texts and media comments concerned, I try to study her works from two points of penetration. On the one hand she inherits the tradition of Chinese literati, on the other hand she is considerably influenced by western culture. Under global context with Orient and Occident as frame of reference of each other, she criticizes social problems from her individual angle. As a citizen of global village, Lung Yingtai examines and analyzes social problems in real life against international background. She is such a modern Chinese intellectual that the strong sense of responsibility revealed in her essays touched me most. The thesis mainly explores the process of the writer forming and developing her cross-cultural comparative vision and pursuing for cultural identification, in which obviously there is a succession of sense of responsibility of Chinese traditional culture. I pay close attention to Lung's writings affected by this kind of influence and focus on the her thinking and finding from her worldwide and historical point of view to such questions as relationships between culture and politics, tradition and modernization, indigenization and internationalization.Lung Yingtai, as a representative of modern Chinese intellectual, as a daughter of Chinese culture and a Taiwanese as well, faces all kinds of puzzlements and conflicting emotions. In the course of searching for the answers, her strong sense of responsibility and critical spirit significantly influence our society.
