In 1990s, with the development of politics and economy in the world, photography stepped into the post-modern stage. Post-modern photography began in late 1970s. Actually, it can even trace back to late 1950s.In semantics, "conceptual photography" includes informal "art photography" and formal "expressionist photography", "abstract photography", "surrealist photography", etc. In semantics, it is opposed to documentary photography, realistic photography.... "Concept" means thoughts and consciousness. "Concept" is the particular expression of thoughts and consciousness. "Conceptual photography", as a lexicon in art, has its specific meaning. It is not a simple temporal substitution for the former one, but a new definition of photography and art in the post-modern sophisticated culture.Conceptual artists in early times promoted the establishment of the status of concept as the art core by efforts. Artists don't aim at creating visualized substances any more. They begin to put emphasis on the function of art as "visual allegory" in the expression of artists' thoughts. At the same time, they not only work hard on breaking through traditional concepts and system but also consider the meaning in sociology or anthropology. This broadens the meaning of "conceptual art", which represents the tendency of art in many circumstances besides the title of a concrete movement in art. To some extent, conceptual art is identical with post-modern art because it is one of the most remarkable characteristics in post-modern art.
