There are plenty of metaphors in our life .Metaphor doesn't only exist in our language, but also exists in our mind and our conception system. As an important cognitive method, metaphors both have generalities and individualities in different languages. According to their different cognitive patterns, Lakoff classified metaphors into three kinds: structural metaphor, spatial metaphor, ontological metaphor. Scholars in cognitive linguistics field generally think that spatial metaphor is of important significance for human to form their conceptions, for most of the abstract conceptions are expressed and comprehended through spatial metaphor.On the basis of the former scholars' metaphor research fruit, this dissertation mainly compares and analyses the expressions of the spatial relationship, the diversities and similarities between the expressive forms and the space metaphorical cognition of quantity, time, state, scope, social relations, etc. in English and Chinese as well as explores the internal causes.Chapter one is the introduction dealing with the reason for the topic selection, the research content, the main research approaches and the research significance.Chapter two is a review of ancient and modern metaphor research history both at home and aboard on the line of the famous scholars in metaphor research history. This chapter follows the process in which the dependent study of metaphor as one of the figures of speech develops into the independent study of metaphor as cognitive means. This chapter also looks back on the history of spatial metaphor's development.Chapter three combines the metaphor cognitive theories at home and aboard, discusses the nature of metaphor and spatial metaphor , analyses the diversities and similarities of spatial metaphorical cognition in Chinese and English.Chapter four analyses the expressions of the spatial relationship, the diversities and similarities between the expressive forms and the space metaphorical cognition of quantity, time, state, scope, social relations, etc. in English and Chinese as well as explores the internal causes.
