| Meng Jiao is an important poet whose writings are concerned with the restoration of the ancient way in the Mid-Tang Dynasty. The thesis carries out a discussion around Meng's ancient-restoring orientation and makes a deep study of the poet and his poems, attempting to reveal why and how his poems were oriented toward the ancient traditions, in what a way it develops and how his unique writing style is eventually shaped.At first, the thesis gives a brief overview of the previous studies on Meng's poems and raises the problems that exist therein to make some preparations for the further study of his ancient-restoring orientation. Then, it explores the cultural disparities of the different epochs and analyzes the reasons why the critics after the Tang and Song Dynasties thought radically different of Meng, and how his dispositions and personal pursuit led him to write the poems that tired to return to the back. Next, the author reviews the previous poetics that exerted some positive influence on Meng Jiao, concluding that worship of Confucianism is one important point of his poetics according to his daily words. Finally, a discussion is held about how Meng realizes his poetic spirit in the process of poem writing by the choice of themes and by the artistic writing techniques. |
