The topic of this thesis is on the Choral Composition of Qu Xixian.Qu Xixian, a famous female music composer in China, was born in Shanghai in 1919. Qu began to learn playing piano and attend the hymn singing when she was a church middle school student. After the Anti-Japan War broke out, Qu participated the propaganda against the Japanese invasion actively. In 1940 Qu entered the Chongqing State Conservatory of Music and majored in Piano. In 1943 she studied music composition with Franker and Tan Xiaolin at the Shanghai State Conservatory of Music. After her graduation, she taught at the Music Department of the Peking State Art School from 1949. Qu subsequently was engaged in music composition at the Music Department of the Central Conservatory of Music, the Central Art Troup of Singing & Dancing and the Central Symphony Orchestra of China. Her main composition includes "THE CANTATA Of THE RED ARMY BASE", "PASTORAL", "LISTENING TO MUM TELLING THE PAST", "PROLETARIATS OF THE WORLD, UNITE", etc. as well as some film music, of which the choral composition is the subject that she most devoted herself to and achieved brilliant achievement. Qu was productive. Based on profound comprehension about the theory and the distinctive representation of chorus, her choral composition roots in the Chinese traditional music and, in the meantime used the experiences of the western chorus for reference. So her works is often used as the favored repertoire by most of choruses and audiences from all circles.The goal of this thesis is by discussing and analyzing Qu's works to find how she succeeded in the music composition. Furthermore, it aims to inspirit the people working at choral composition or performance to think through discussion on Qu's view of composition and its features.
