Jack London was a productive American writer. But literary critics have different views on his works and himself: some critics praise his works and some praise him as a person, calling him "father of American proletarian literature"; some regard him as naturalistic writer; some regard him as adorer of Nietzsche. The Call of the Wild and White Fang are Jack London's two important animal novels, which are full of naturalistic elements which proclaim that writers should reveal objective things and reality, study the rules behind, and explore the reasons for these things and reality. From the naturalistic point of view, this thesis analyzes the influences of heredity and environment on the lives of Buck and White Fang, heroes of The Call of the Wild and White Fang. On this basis, the thesis, combining Jack London's special life, attempts to study Jack London's complex and contrary ideas, and explores the reasons for his conflicted thoughts—product of time and his own experiences.
