The government of Canada proclaimed the policy of multiculturalism in 1971. In the last thirty years, the policy of multiculturalism has exercised a great influence in both Canada and the world. The study about the background and reasons is propitious to interpret the policy and may help us to re-understand the history of Canada. This thesis can be roughly divided into 5 parts.Part Ⅰ, the synthesis on the studies about the reasons of the proclamation. I try to find the gateway by analysing the scholars' opinions.Part Ⅱ, the formation of the French-Canadian society. After two hundred years, the French-Canadian society had taken shape, which has been the most important pole in the structure of the Canadian society. The French-Canadian is the character of Canada, and the base of formation of the political principles.Part Ⅲ, the political principles in the constitutions from 1763 to 1867. The government of England proclaimed five constitutions in the 105 years, from which I find out the three political principles: the politics of recognition, the federalism (the self-government) and the nationalism.Part Ⅳ, the reasons of the proclamation of that policy. I try to find the relations between the political principles and the proclamation.Part Ⅴ, conclusion. The political principles in the colony times are the long-term reasons of the proclamation of that policy. |
