Frontier poetry, as an important literary phenomenon, is both historical and geographic. Multi-leveled and multi-angled, it reflects the army life. At different times, frontier poetry is entitled with different contents, showing different artistry. Only studying frontier poetry historically and dialectically can we draw an objective conclusion, which fits the developing rule of literature. The studies of frontier poetry have made considerable achievements. Such studies include the following four points. Firstly, it is about the definitions and origins of frontier poetry. Secondly, it is about the nature and the reason for prosperity of frontier poetry. Thirdly, it is about the study on style of different poets. Fourthly, it is about the research on aesthetic style of frontier poetry. Generally speaking, such studies are not thorough both in depth and width, although they have paid certain attention to the frontier poetry before Tang Dynasty. They are limited to specific studies. There are rare comprehensive studies of the frontier poetry in the Northern and Southern Dynasties.By comparing and summarizing, the thesis analyzes the connotation of "frontier" and "fortress" , and compares the differences between frontier poetry, recruitment poetry, war poetry and borderland poetry. It makes a scientific definition of frontier poetry, observes and studies the development and evolution of it. Therefore, the thesis has acquired an over-all clear line of the development of frontier poetry. By analyzing the special social and cultural backgrounds in the Northern and Southern Dynasties, the thesis expounds the reason why frontier poetry developed with a fixed pattern at that time from two perspectives of the historical and real situations at that time and literary developing features. The former concerns national harmony and cultural exchange. The later involves the imitation of Yue Fu style on the contents and aesthetics of frontier poetry. The former is developed from the perspectives of nostalgia, aspiration of achievements and frontier sights. The later is developed from the characteristics of being lucid and minute, being vast and strong.By analyzing and expounding in details, the thesis sums up the profound influence that the frontier poetry in the Northern and Southern Dynasties exerts on that at the flourishing age of Tang Dynasty. The influence includes drawing material and formal technique. The drawn materials are feelings of win honors, the combination of chivalry and frontier poetry, and the combination of women sadness and frontier poetry. The formal techniques include the writing methods of using the past to disparage the present, the imitation of Yue Fu style and the style of being optimistic and heroic. The frontier poetry in the Northern and Southern Dynasties is an essential turning point in the history of ancient frontier poetry. Although it is nominal in contents and childish in arts, it is a active exploring stage of both imitation and creation. It lays a solid foundation for the summit of frontier poetry at the flourishing age of Tang Dynasty.
