Since modern times, traditional culture has gradually declined in the collision between Chinese and western cultures. At the beginning of the Republic of China, a new political system was constructed, and the institutional decline of the Confucian was inevitable. But the great change of the state system and the system of government couldn't dispel the people's culture mental structure, which formed during the thousands of years. The special environment of modern change period made the fields of thought consciousness turbid. New authority hadn't been established, while the morality belief and culture mental met crisis because of the great change of the political institution. The violation in the field of thought induced to universal lack of faith and morality, with a turbid society of the early Republic of China. To break away from the crisis, the reconstruction of authority became a inevitable choice. So, Considering cultural nationalism, Kang You-wei, Chen Huan-Chang and some other people initiated the Confucian Association and the Confucian Religious Movement, with the tenet of "to propagate Confucianism and to relieve the society". They tried to solve the problems by reconstruct the authority of Confucian thought.Kang You-wei and Chen Huan-Chang's Confucian Association thought and practice had engendered for a long time. Before and after the WUXU-reform of the Late Qing Dynasty, Kang You-wei's Confucian Association thought had elementarily formed, and he tried his best to practice his Confucian Association Thought .At the beginning of the Republic of China, the special environment gave a good chance to them. They organized the Confucian Association, promoted magazines, enlarged the organization and disseminate their thoughts. Especially, the two state religion movements to try to take the Confucian as the state religion made the Confucian Religious Movement rising, because they touched the focal problems such as public belief and cultural development. These movements showed the regard of the Confucian people to the social realistic problems and traditional culture. They also showed the breast and some tendency of the cultural nationalism.Every nation has its own spirit character, and each spirit character contains its specific culture meaning and its special history origins. The Confucian Association imitated the western Christianity model to reconstruct the authority of Confucianism. In fact, it reflect the predicament of Chinese traditional culture in the conflict between Chinese and western culture. In front of the strike of western culture and the changing statement of China, Where can Chinese traditional culture go? The Confucian Religious Movement didn't answer the question well. Because of the complicated connection between the Confucian Religious Movement and feudal restoring activities, and because of the failure of state religion movement, the Confucian Association declined gradually. But both of the efforts of reconstruct authority to solve moral faith problems, and the thinking of cultural nationalism which the Confucian Religious Movement had showed tell us that, as a national country which has a long history, we can not neglect the transferring, develop and remake. This offers much edification to today's cultural construction.
