Carmen is the leading character in the novel written by Meriee, a famous French writer. Since the novel was published in 1845, the figure of Carmen has come into the gallery of the world literature for its artistic charming, and become a lasting-in-history image in the world. In 1871, the French composer Georges Bizet devoted himself to the composition of Carmen and contributed to its performance on opera stage. From then on, Carmen, a stubborn and intractable girl, was well-known for her strong emotion and unique personality, lasting on the world stage. The four-scene opera Carmen was composed in 1874 by Georges Bizet. The story happened in a Spanish town of 1830 . Carmen, a sexy, beautiful, bold Gipsy girl, lost her heart to Don Jose, who had been proposed but couldn't resist Carmen's attraction and fell into love. Later Carmen loved Escamillo, a matador, and turned a deaf ear to Don Jose' advice and request, which made Don Jose angry with envy, so he killed Carmen when she celebrated for the matador's victory. Love is one of the most important aspects that show the concepts of freedom in Gipsy life, among which their attitudes towards love were paid much attention to. In Carmen, Bizet fully interpreted Gipsy philosophy and life, describing the freedom existing in the concept of their life and ideal love.In writing the essay, two clues are followed. The essay begins with the study of Carmen, the original woks by Meriee, in which the charactersare analyzed according to the history background and Meriee's life story. The essay continues with the study of the opera Carmen, in which the creation, performance and aesthetic are analyzed. There are four parts in the essay. In part one, the background from the end of 18th century to the middle 19th century and the characters are introduced. Part two mainly deals with the characteristic works of Bizet and his creation features. Part three focuses on the portraits of character by analysis of overture and main arias. The literature value and significance of studying to Carmen are summarized in Part four.Carmen is an exotic flower in the garden of literature and opera. It is worth hearing a hundred times, but as to how we can understand and portray Carmen, my opinion is that we can perfect them through constant studying.
