David Lodge is a famous literature critic and novelist in England. So far, his thirteennovels and more than ten collections of literary comments and thesis are published."Anti-modernist novel" which he wrought based on what inherits from the tradition ofrealist novel, and mixed with new literary technique of kinds of modernist andpostmodernist. Intertextuality as a writing technique is the junction of literarytradition and new literary technique, which show the charm of Lodge's novels. Thispaper try to begin with analyzing Lodge's literary theory, sort his points of intertextualwriting, and analyze specifically the application and effect of intertextual writing onSmall World.The paper includes foreword, text of three parts, epilogue and attached list.The foreword introduces Lodge's personal experience, writings and achievements. Italso introduces the research status of Lodges and his writings home and abroad, thecontroversy on positioning of Small World that post-modernist or anti-modernist. Thecontroversy focuses on a mass of the post-modern novel skills represented byintertextuality in Small World.Part 1 offers the novel theory of Lodge. It consists of six aspects: novel is a kind oflanguage art, Pentulum Theory, the conversion of dialogue mode of novel, thedialogue speciality in novel, novel and the modern media, novel and consciousness.The six aspects are the source of Lodge's intertextuality.Part 2 sorts Lodge's points of intertextuality writing, which divides into six aspects:novel comes from novel, use the newel of parody to answer to exhausted literature ofJohn Bass and the anxiety of influence of Bloom, intertext is the decisive factor ofconception and writing, intertextuality is one way to compose polyphony novel, theeffect of intertext can only be seen with readers' participation, what is therepresentation methods of intertextuality.Part 3 analyses the special application of Lodge's intertextuality theory in Small World.It divides into four aspects: parody which includes parody of name and differenttheme novels, allusion of conception and specific imago, direct adduction of traditional text and the saying of litterateur and critic, parallel structure which means the parallelism to source text in structure.Epilogue sums up the application effects of intertextuality, and also points out that we should consider about the limiting factors such as style when using the intertextuality.
