Liu Dakui, a famous expert of ancient Chinese prose, achieved between Fang Bao and Yao Nai in Tongcheng School -- the most influential literary school of the Qing dynasty. Though Liu once played an noticeable role in the formation and development of Tongcheng School, current studies of him is still more weakly than Fang Bao and Yao Nai. They mainly concentrate on the family background biography, the anthology reorganizes, academic thought and so on, but the writing research is insufficiently to be full. Therefore, based on the related background knowledge, this paper takes Liu Dakui's classical Chinese literature creation as research keys, trying to represent his status and function in Tongcheng School. It is divided into the following parts:The first chapter focuses on Liu Dakui's biography, views on literature and academic thoughts. Liu was born in the 37th year of Kangxi (1698) and died in the 44th year(1779) of QianLong. Obviously, he went the "Grand Times of Kang and Qian" according to historians. But the destiny of Liu Dakui is erroneous. Although he is good at imperial examination papers, he could not actually pass the imperial civil service examination all his life. In literature, he advocated "have a strong point in addition to". It included the manners, syllables, words and expressions, and "the twelve points" on writing, etc.. His academic thoughts was compatible with that in Han dynasty and Song dynasty, which distinguished himself in the Three Ancestors of Tongcheng School.Styles of Liu Dakui's works are discussed in the second chapter. Liu achieved a lot in ancient prose writing. The way that he expressed feelings is more intense and frank, comparing with Fang Bao's and Yao Nai's. Based on different literary styles, this paper makes a research on the argument class, the preface and postscript class, the handed down in the family tablet will class and the miscellany class article of Liu's works respectively, trying to display the characteristics of his various literary styles, his inheritance and development of the ancient literature and the influence given by the times and his; life experience.Liu's argumentation proses are 23 in total. As Liu Shipei once commented that "only Liu had thoughts comparing with others" among the writers of Tongcheng School. Liu's argumentations are brief and sharp, which fully illustrates this point. His preface and postscript articles are 90 altogether. They mainly express his sadness for having no opportunity to use his talents and the hope of being recognized and promoted. He also shows his sympathy to the writers who has the similar destiny. As for the family biography and tablet inscriptions, there are 72. Liu doesn't rigidly adhere to the convention. He concentrates on description of the important aspects about some one. So his articles are not only rich in thoughts, but also touching. Miscellany works are 28. The most excellent parts of it are the scenery travel notes. They are especially splendid in the describing the grand scenery. At last, things like Liu Dakui's status, role and appraisal in Tongcheng School are mentioned. No matter from a literary theory aspect, or an aspect of the ancient prose writing , Liu is one of the important people for the prosperity and development of Tongcheng School. He not only succeeded and developed Fang Bao's ideas, but enlightened Yao Nai. Besides, he had many disciples in his life, such as Yao Nai, Wang Zhuo, Wu Ding, Cheng Jinfang, Wu Shaoze and so on. All these contributed a lot to the prevalence and influence of the Tongcheng School.Based on the analysis to Liu Dakui's works, Liu's characteristics of writing, the succession and development of the predecessors, and the embodiment of his literary opinions in his works are discussed. Thus, this thesis shows its innovative value.
