The love and marriage poems are the most brilliant part of the Book of Songs, which offers us important references to understand the custom on the love and marriage of our ancestors. The image is the soul of a piece of poem, and also the place where one starts reading the poem. To carry out a cultural analysis on the image allows for a better comprehension and grasp of it, and thus a fuller preparation for the poem reading. Combining research methods of many disciplines such as culture, poetics, anthropology, folklore, history, psychology, this article studies the texts of the love and marriage poems and conducts some tentative cultural analyses on the image in these poems. The analysis mainly goes in two ways: understanding custom and value on love and marriage from a perspective of cultural history; and approaching the multiplicity of cultural substance and cultural peculiarity of the image in love and marriage poems from the angle of cultural poetics. The innovation of this article lies in the comprehensive cultural analysis of the image in love and marriage poems. Aside from the introduction and conclusion, this article is divided into three chapters.The introduction presents the status quo of research on love and marriage poems and the definition of these poems.The first chapter is about the general idea of the analysis of the image. It contains the definition of image and culture, the methodology of culture history and culture poetics, the general introduction of image in love and marriage poems and the forming of image.The second chapter analyzes the image in love and marriage poems from the perspective of culture history. Firstly it introduces the cultural and historical background where the love and marriage poems emerge, then explores its cultural and historic significance through the analysis of the image: the diversity of custom on love and marriage, among which there are custom of会男女, custom on love and marriage restrained by feudal ethics, custom of lads and girls showing love by exchange of gifts and custom during marriage; The value on love and marriage corresponding with custom chiefly reflects on three aspects of value on birth, choosing partners and love & marriage.The third chapter analyzes the image of love and marriage poems from a perspective of cultural poetry. The cultural origin of image is the accumulation of primitive culture and nurture of agricultural culture. The first feature of image is that most of them possess multiple cultural substances, and principally taking water and gathering as examples. The second feature of image is the peculiar expression of its cultural substance. In the first place, images are the product of the context of love and marriage, and they chiefly take fish, bird and horse as instances to show the differences of the meaning they got in love and marriage poems and non-love marriage poems. Secondly, it points out the simplicity of image in love and marriage poems by comparing them with those in works of Quyuan.The conclusion is briefly about significance of the cultural analysis of image in love and marriage poems.
