"I should be a silk cotton beside you, standing with you as a tree." This is a sentence from " To the Oak" by Chinese poet Shu Ting. Longing for freedom and care is always a major theme in literature throughout the world, and it is especially true of feminine world. Therefore, the publication of Kate Chopin's The Awakening caught the eye of the literary circles and inspired heated debate about womanhood and the fate of women. This is inevitable and this is the development of the history. Kate Chopin is famous for her short stories. Her female characters are eager to pursue freedom and to explore the meanings of life. This feminine consciousness was growing at that time. Chopin also employed several methods to present it. Therefore her works achieved great aesthetic effects. This paper aims to analyze Kate Chopin's writing features, themes andartistic effects from three perspectives——ecologism, post-colonialism andstructuralism, so as to understand Kate Chopin's feminine consciousness. Her works are closely related to ecologism recounting close relations between women, nature and art. In her works, The heroines get their power from nature and realize that they are both considered as objects and are persecuted. Her works also connect with post-colonialism by way of probing into historical causes of primary feminine consciousness and the process of becoming a subject. So the combination of feminine consciousness and post-colonialism are also meaningful. From structural perspective, her works are excellent. The Awakening sets a good example. This novel can be viewed as a whole to exhibit the course of heroines' awakening of subject consciousness step by step. Furthermore, it is not only a process of awakening as a woman, but also as a human being to pursue freedom and care.
