"the Puning" Rhetoric Of Narrative Analysis

Vladimir Nabokov (1899-1977) is one of the outstanding Russian-born American writer, scholar and translator in the world literature of the 20th Century, Among his numerous works,"Lolita"and"Pale Fire"have been regarded as classics works in the world.Pnin is the third works Nabokov creats in English in America, and also it is the first works causing widespread attention in American readers. The paper based on the power-discourse theory of Foucault and using rhetoric narratology as analytical methods, at the basis of observing narrative mode, it inquiry into the relations in the back of society powers, and the influence to the creators.The paper has three chapters.The first chapter briefly introduce the characteristics of narrative structure in Nabokov's works, and the main characteristic of rhetoric narratology analysis----- narration is the author conveying the knowledge, emotions, value and beliefs to the readers with the narrative words. The second chapter is the narrative words and the analysis of story. Firstly, the author divided the story into two parts: Narrator's story and author's story. Further through the analysis of the different parts'voice and the connotation of the story., we come to the conclusion:Pnin express the great difference on the surface of inner and outer of the story , in the inner is Pnin's story which is narrated by the authority narrator; and in the outer , the author deny the narrator's voice, and tells the pity story of Pnin. In my opinion, the narrative strategy in the story not only connected with the interests of author's creation, but also influenced by the implication social power.Chapter three mainly analyze the narrative strategy words. First, one is the author chose the narrators to devise the classification of the readers, and took the American as the main reader. the work also appealed the ideal readers of the author actively. Then pnin analyzed the relations between the view of overseas Russian and the nation's identification. On the one hand, author dealt with the image of pnin to fit for the American's view in their hearts, On the other hand, author made the overseas Russian story become one part of the nation narratory. Finally, the narrative strategy in Nabokov's pnin is the result which he actively pursued the authority in America .
