A Study On The Narrative Strategy Of Grafton's Novels

Sue Grafton,an outstanding American novelist and TV drama writer,is one of the representative female writers of hard-boiled detective fictions,and she set off the"3F" wave with Sara Paretsky.And each of alphabet speculative fiction,with its unconventional and innovative writing techniques,created by her is sorted in alphabet order and expand the perspective of detective fiction.Based on the unique narrative strategies,this series of books highlight the "ideological novelist" Grafton's exploration of realistic society through deconstructing the confusions of how to catch criminals and detective spirit during the process of puzzle-solving.This dissertation focuses on the narrative strategies used by Sue Grafton in her works.And the Chapter One is emphasized on exploring the embodiment and attention of the value consciousness expressed by narrative intervention in this strategy;the Chapter Two analyzes the construction and blankness of suspense in the"Alphabet Series" works from inquiry,layered and open structures;The Chapter Three strives to distinguish and analyze the female consciousness,based on the study of Sue Grafton's narrative discourse,in terms of narrative perspective,narrative voice and narrative intervention;and the Chapter Four discusses the importance of the narrative strategy to the fiction characteristics from two aspects of the author's personal creative context and the social context given by the times.And the above four aspects of the narrative strategy,mainly based on the realism literature of Grafton's "Alphabet Series" in the anti-traditional hard-boiled detective fictions,are to further exploration of the spiritual world.She worked as a Hollywood screenwriter.Her work experience as a Hollywood screenwriter endowed Grafton with refined creative skills.And her works are simple in text but profound in meaning,multiple in structure and exciting in content,ingenious in sentences and logic in certain suspense.Her fictions show a kind of ideological exploration and a high praise for the spirit of detectives,which exerts great practical significance.This study attempts to analyze and discuss how Grafton uses narrative strategies to upgrade suspense reasoning and fuller textual narrative from the perspective of narrative intervention,narrative structure,narrative discourse and narrative context,and then to explain the importance of narrative strategies for constructing works,the aesthetic value and significance of Grafton's narrative strategy and the personal consciousness behind Grafton's expression of realistic confusion and detection of spiritual difficulties.
