Street mural paining appeared in the 1960s in some European and American countries, which is now widely used. It is usually painted on the external sides or walls of the building as a kind of public arts. Street mural paining, which appeared rather late in China, was not introduced until 1990s. Nowadays there are a lot of achievements in the research on street mural paining, but there are few studies on it from the angle of cultural aesthetics, which is the emphasis of the thesis. Most of ancient mural painting have educational, cognitive and aesthetic functions, while street mural paining, as a new form of mural painting , has its unique function---recreation. The thesis mainly discuss, in three aspects, the recreational aesthetic feature owned by street mural paining through the analysis on the consumptive society, mass culture and the works of street mural paining home and abroad.Firstly, street mural paining not only employs the forms of traditional mural painting, but also pay more attention to apply popular forms widely in its design, such as humor, absurdity, visual hallucination, doodle and super-realism. Humor makes street mural paining relaxing and pleasant, while absurdity is the product of the present industrialized society, and visual hallucination adds the visual interest to street mural paining. Those forms have enriched street mural paining, given prominence to the recreational and popular feature of street mural paining and enhanced its unique feature as a kind of public art. Those features are important in distinguishing street mural paining and traditional mural painting。Secondly, street mural paining appeared as the result of economic development and is the artistic embodiment of the progress in economic and social development since any kind of phenomenon or form in art has definitely its social and historical background and every times has its own"art". Approached from the consumptive, popular and recreational features of modern consumptive society, the thesis explores the relationship between street mural paining and modern consumptive society and further dwells on the idea that recreation has become the aesthetic fashion in our society and street mural paining has shown the recreational quality in aesthetic features which is closely connected with street mural painting's embodiment forms such as humor and so on.Thirdly, the thesis analyzes the social and historical background and embodiment methods of street mural paining as well as the its current development home and abroad and compares some works in street mural paining home and abroad. After the analysis of works home and abroad in order to outline the current development of street mural paining in China, some problems are illustrated---compared with the street mural paining abroad, its popular and recreational features are not so obvious in China and there are still problems such as lack of skills and conceptive superficialness in its artistic quality, because street mural paining in China appeared rather late and has no theoretical basis.Through the analysis of the consumptive society, mass culture and recreational quality, the thesis tries to give a comprehensive description of recreational quality in aesthetic features of street mural paining, outlines the current development of street mural paining in China by means of the comparison of works in street mural paining home and abroad and further describes the future of street mural paining in China.
