Mural painting is one of the oldest forms of painting art, which centers on the interaction between man and the environment in which he lives. Modern mural, as it is shown in public places and designed for the common people, is regarded as a kind of public art. After some practical work in mural creation and theoretical study, the author fully experiences the charm of mural painting as a kind of public art or environmental art. The thesis reexamines western murals form the perspective of its forms of expression by employing such methods as induction and exemplification. In western mural history, the artists show different concerns about the manifestation of mural creation. In ancient times, the artists stressed"what to paint",paying more attention to the choice of subject matter. In the 20th century, the realization of the importance of the law of art and the emphasis on the study of the nature of art form made modern artists be more concerned with"how to paint".However, their pursuit of tableau patterns went too far. In contrast, contemporary artists focus more attention on different conceptions, that is,"how to think".Different concerns with forms of expressions lead to different mural styles. What to paint-the choice of different subject matter.Classical murals are different from modern and contemporary murals in manifestation. They attach more importance to the choice of subject matter, so the artists at the time mainly concerned themselves with"what to paint"!The murals in the Renaissance have the following characteristics, first the objective world reflected in the painting is greatly emphasized; second, in terms of painting technique, they are painted realistically space; third, with regard to forms of expression, they pay more attention to the choice of theme; fourth, most of the classical paintings are devoted to religion to reflect the reality and express the thoughts of humanism. Besides, there are some works that are related to philosophy, my theology and secular life. How to paint-the creation of different painting techniques. In respect of forms of expression, modern murals put more emphasis on the creation of painting techniques. The 20th century led Europe into its modern times. Modern mural painting also changed a great deal. It put more importance on the law of art, emphasizing the study of the nature of form. The age witnessed the appearance of many modern mural masters, such as Klimt, Picasso and Matisse. These artists disregard the main content of traditional murals and are not content with the representation of objects. Rather, they try to show certain signs and patterns by employing specific figure, which are what they really pursue. Thus, these artists show more consideration for"how to paint".The modeling techniques are of various kinds, exaggeration, deformation, reconstruction and abstraction. How to think-the reconstruction of different time and space. The pluralist state of art after it stepped into post-modernism also left its trace in mural painting and public art, which advance forward in the direction of pluralism. Traditional values and aesthetic conception are just one respect of pluralism. Novel forms present themselves in people'space and visual environment. The introduction of concept will greatly verify and expand the expression of space, vision and mentality. The artists give more thoughts to"how to think". The peculiar conception about the combination of figure in the painting gives rise to logical space, fantastic space, contradictory space and symbolic space.Among different schools of mural art, there is no distinction between advanced and backward. Their differences lie in their cultural notions and aesthetic notions. The three manifestations of mural painting don't totally correspond to three specific ages. Rather, it is often the case that they coexist in one age and one of them is the main trend.Ancient and modern art, both at home and abroad, is valuable wealth that we can make use of today. Only by drawing lessons from the creative work of our predecessors, can we get to know their strong points and develop them. In this process, we should adhere to the principle of"discard the dross and select the essential".The diversity in the forms of expression of western murals has a positive influence on the modern murals of china.Mural painting provides us a field that is broad and free. The exploration of it will never end. The form and connotation of murals will be more and more colorful.
