Ge Hong, who has made remarkable contributions in the fields of pharmacy, medical science and chemistry, was an outstanding scientist in Jin Dynasty. Besides, he was a famous Taoist scholar. He testified theoretically and systematically the existence of immortals and hence possibility of learning from them. Ge Hong's immortal ideal surpassed the real life and entailed rich life philosophy. He also established a set of religious and ethical principles and restraining mechanism so as to realize his tenet conceming immortals. This thesis, by abiding by the principles of integrating history and logic, conducts academic studies mainly in text interpretation and universal truth explanation with rational troth-seeking stance, academic spirit of bold exploration and the studying approach of combining documents research and rational philosophical analysis. Thus a modern interpretation of Ge Hong's thought of immortals is made by explaining and analyzing three fields such as his thought of immortals and philosophical basis, ethical principles and restraining mechanism as well as his proper historical position and values in the modern society. Finally this thesis makes its conclusion: Ge Hong's thought of immortals as a kind of existent ideal, contains sensibility in its approval of life values and interpretation of life's essence. So the exploration of life ideology in Ge Hong's tenet of immortals plays an important enlightening role in the reconstruction of modern life ethics.
