"Father" has special meanings in the Chinese traditional society which emphasizes "the country and the family are the same essentially". Because of that, the father role becomes an important symbol of Chinese movies' imagination about the family, the country, the society and the culture. In the movies of different periods, father roles are different. Chinese early films showed the tragedy that traditional fathers lost their dignity. The forth step of Chinese films built the revolutionary fathers, and rebuilt new father roles after the Cultural revolutionary. The fifth step of Chinese films created the negative and morbid fathers, and made them became humanity. The sixth step of Chinese films reflected the diversification of father roles nowadays. Father roles in films of Hong Kong and Taiwan provided tactics to revolve the conflictions between tradition and modern. This essay reviews the father roles in the Chinese movies and discusses the changes of father roles in the family life through father-son relationship, the way and the result that father-right puts into effect. Through the above analysis this essay concludes three changes of Chinese traditional ethic: the change of traditional filial piety, the collapse of the father-right paternalism and the transform from "the root of family" to "the root of human".In the complicated situation of nowadays, Chinese family ethic is facing the moral predicament. To build the modern family ethic is very important to the socialist spiritual civilization. It will rebuild the new family ethic through basing on the democracy, the freedom and the equality, learning from the traditional cultural and the latter modern cultural and overcoming the shortcomings of the unreasonable elements.
