This study was designed to investigate the possible difference between male and female college students in vocabulary learning attainment. A series of correlation analysis was conducted to find out whether such difference was significantly related with gender difference in self-efficacy beliefs. The results revealed that significant difference existed between male and female students in vocabulary attainment. And as hypothesized, positive and significant correlations existed between students' vocabulary attainment and their self-efficacy beliefs, and between students' self-efficacy beliefs and gender. The positive correlations provide some evidence that as an intermediate factor between students' vocabulary attainment and gender, students' self-efficacy imposes a great influence on gender difference in vocabulary attainment. The results of the study, to certain extent, explained, from the perspective of self-efficacy beliefs, why female college students show a general superiority to male students in vocabulary learning, and produce some sound pedagogical implications on how to improve students', esp. male students' vocabulary attainment in English language learning.
