Paul Kranze, born in Germany, one of many foreign missionaries coming to China in late Qing Dynasty, translated the China's ancient classics "Four Book" into Chinese vernacular used by the ordinary Chinese people when he came to China. Different from the researches done by the previous missionaries came to China, who mainly concentrated on translating Confucian classics into western languages, Paul Kranze's translation initiated the introduction of the ancient Chinese classics of "Four Book" to massive common people in simple thus better understood form both at home and abroad. Salient as he was in the research on the Chinese classical culture from eyes of westerners', the thorough review of the relative literature suggests that the systematic and specific study on Paul Kranze is scarce, even doesn't exist, and the current research is carried out in such context.Paul Kranze's translation embodied his special research characteristics and professional model in terms of smooth language, the clear and vivid understanding on ancient books, precise discourse and devotional religious spirit, which contributed to the development of Chinese culture revolutionarily. In the process of researching Confucian, his views on Confucian and his evaluation on Confucius were with special styles.With comprehensive analytic methods, this paper analyzes and studies Paul Kranze's understanding on Confucian classics when he stayed in china in terms of history, religion, linguistics and education. This paper consists of the introduction and four main parts. The introduction reviews the previous researches on missionaries in the late Qing Dynasty, specifically their researches on Chinese traditional culture and basic elements in Paul Kranzes' researches in terms of causes, purpose, methods, and contents.In part one , chapter one discusses the culture underground of Paul Kranze's translation on Chinese traditional.Part two includes chapter two and chapter three, which mainly discusses Paul Kranze's researches on "Four Book". Chapter two has a detailed study on Paul Kranze's translation in terms of his motivation, his Chinese language art, methods, time and places. Chapter three analyzes and explains specifically Paul Kranze's translation on "Four Book".In part three, chapter four describes his analysis and recognization on Confucian in terms of Paul Kranze's translation works on Confucian, and investigates his unique insight and understanding on the relationship between dominical culture and Confucius culture.In part four, chapter five discusses Paul Kranze's point of views on Confucius in the process of researching Confucian classics. Paul Kranze analyzed and thought about Confucian classics, and the history values and limitation of Confucian culture from a new angle based on Bible doxies. Paul Kranze's study, based on his unique attitudes and method, provides a new perspective on Chinese traditional culture and Chinese ancient philosophers, which is helpful for Chinese people to rethink the post and significance of our valuable cultural relics.
