"journey To The West" Preposition Study

The thesis, belonging to the research for the grammar of modern Chinese language on a certain book, which takes Story of a Journey to the West published by Shanghai Ancient Works Press in 1898 as materials and adopts the way of investigation and statistics, tries to give a plain depiction synchronically and comparative research diachronically on the preposition.The thesis is divided into five chapters besides the preface and conclusion. The first chapter is "Introduction" which briefly introduces the acquirement and definitions of the independent position of preposition, the demarcations between preposition and other phases, the classification of prepositions and its general situation of research in recent years. Chapter Two is "Preposition Classification Analysis in Story of a Journey to the West". According to the meaning of the object cited, the proposition can be classified as following: the preposition of time and dwelling, the preposition of direction, the preposition of dependence and cause, the preposition of reason and purpose, the passive preposition involved the user, and the preposition of handling the tools. The chapter combines the meaning and foundation to give a delicate description and notices as well as analyze the sentence structures related to preposition in Story of a Journey to the West. Chapter Three, "Sentence Pattern Related to Preposition in Story of a Journey to the West", emphasizes the main patterns such as the sentences involving the word "Ba(把)", "Jiang(将)", "Bei(被)", "Bi(比)", and "Lian(连)", and attach more importance of the structure characteristics and function meanings. The fourth chapter is "Syntax Analysis of preposition phrases in Story of a Journey to the West". This chapter carries on the investigation and analysis about the component, the omission and placing before, the syntax function and the distribution of preposition. Chapter Five is "Diachronic Investigation of Preposition in Story of a Journey to the West. " The chapter compares the prepositions in Story of a Journey to the West, Thirty Sorts of Poetic Dramas in Yuan Dynasty (《元刊杂剧三十种》) , and in other modem Chinese language. At last, the thesis concludes the situation of preposition in use and summarizes its characteristics.
