From the point of view of semantics, vagueness can be explained as the words and sentences having varied meanings. However, from the perspective of pragmatics, it is beneficial for us to use deliberately the vague utterance in some contexts to achieve the best communicative consequences. So in this thesis, we make an attempt to make a study of the production and comprehension of pragmatic vagueness applied in the presidential debates of the United States of America from the pragmatic point of view, in the light of discourse markers. Besides, the whole research is mainly under the instruction of Linguistic Adaptation Theory (LAT) as well as some relative theories such as Relevance Theory (RT).This thesis is divided into six parts. Firstly, it begins with introduction to the objectives, significances, scope and outline of the thesis. Secondly, we introduce briefly the researches of pragmatic vagueness and discourse markers. Thirdly, the following chapter will be devoted to analyzing that discourse markers could help and promote the comprehension of pragmatic vagueness. Fourthly, we firstly mention the LAT and RT, then we attempt to combine some relevant theories of RT with LAT. Fifthly, mainly under the framework of LAT, with the academic assistance of RT, we analyze from the simple to the complex that it is more advantageous to comprehend the pragmatic vagueness with the help from discourse markers. Finally, the paper ends with a general conclusion on the whole.
