The discussion of women characters has always been a weak point in the study of Jin Yong. This thesis chooses A Zi, Li Mochou, Qiu Qianchi, He Hongyao, Mei Fanggu as examples to analyze in details Jin Yong's unique depiction of the"women beyond the border". In the portrayal of these unusual women characters, Jin Yong explores into the innermost part of their hearts. Focusing on their experiences, he creates a series of original women images in the world of martial arts. The"women beyond the border"are a group of characters with modern qualities, going beyond the conventional female images intertwined with moral teaching and male points of view in Chinese novels. So they have great researching value. This thesis set out to explain and research these characters from two points of view: narrative theories and tragic implications, in the hope of acquiring some meaningful fruits to make up for the defects in the research of Jin Yong's female characters. The thesis consists of four parts :The first chapter is a introduction of the theories employed, with emphasis on"point of view"in the theory of narration and relative theories in the realm of tragedy. In addition, it gives specific definitions of the basic concepts applied in this thesis, especially the key concept"women beyond the border". By comparing the female images discussed in the thesis with conventional and traditional ones, it illustrates abstract concepts with specific images, so as to exactly define the female images discussed. The second chapter explores into the background and experience of the"women beyond the border"in terms of three aspects: the background of their growth, the absence of patrons, and the hurts in their love experiences. Using the tracing function of narrative theory, it discusses the influence of their background and experience on the development of their personalities, which justifies the aberrant behaviors of these"women beyond the border".The third chapter discusses Jin Yong's originality in depicting the"women beyond the border"from three aspects: the self-performance of female characters, the hysteric narration of their feelings, and their passion in disguise of coldness. From different dimensions and angles, the author compares these female images with the main female characters and those in other Wu Xia novels so as to demonstrate their unusual and original nature. Jin Yong sets up a stage of love with the"women beyond the border"as the center surrounded by everyone else including the male characters they are in love with. In this sense they are defined and explained by nobody but"herself".The fourth chapter approaches the tragic sense of these characters and probes into the profound reflection of Jin Yong on life by creating them: the panhuman suffering and persevering pursuit of beliefs, which are the two integral parts of their"defeated hero"image in the battle of love and give a new connotation of their whole tragic personalities.
