Hereby strain and relaxation refer to the relationship between various musical factors in piano performance, also to the harmony between the two opposites in piano performance and performing psychology. Strain and relaxation, a unity of opposites, cover the overall process of playing the piano from reading the music score to practicing, and finally to playing the piano without reference to the music score. How can the various factors in piano works embody the relationship between strain and relaxation of musical developmental motivation? How can a player perform the piano works based on the proper degree of tightness of concerned muscles? How can a piano player adjust a balanced psychological state to achieve the perfectly creative performance of the piano works? All the questions mentioned above are concerned in this thesis. This thesis is made up of three parts: introduction, body and conclusion. Introduction is a summary concerning about the aim and significance of the thesis, research methods, research innovations, research orientation and the current situation of this research at home and abroad. Chapter one begins with the piano work itself and analyses the related musical factors (such as melodic line, rhythm, pulse, harmony, speed, dynamics and texture) which can embody the musical strain and relaxation by integrating with detailed cases. Chapter two, which is based on the skill-training orientation, analyses the harmonious relationship between strain and relaxation of the different parts of the body during the process of performance. Chapter three focuses on the implication of strain and relaxation in performance psychology. The performing process on stage is divided into four steps– the preparation period before stepping on the stage, the period preceding the formal performance, the period of performing and the period after performance. This part also discusses how to find proper solutions to removing the negative nervous feeling. Conclusion is a general summary of the issues concerned. This thesis applies the synthetical methods to the research, which is cross-disciplinary and multi-angled. It integrates theory induction with case study by relying on the various musical factors and the crucial points of different skills. The controversy of strain and relaxation acts as the thread throughout this thesis which analyses the piano work itself, performance skills and performing psychology. Point, line and plane are combined and therefore constitute the main body of this thesis.
