This dissertation is a subject study of the image written by Rabindranath Tagorefrom a perspective of comparative imagologie. In general, the image of China written byTagore can be generalized as three processes including imagining China, reading Chinaand expecting China. Before visiting China, Tagore imagined it as a magnificent celestialempire and an ancient civilized country with a long history according to some indirectunderstanding. At the same time, he showed a deep sympathy on neoteric China. Afterarriving, Tagore read China as a huge text and accepted it further based on the reality hetouched and felt. He was not only moved by the beautiful nature of China, but alsofascinated by the excellent culture of China, which was indeed a humanistic utopia in hiseyes and heart. AT the same time, China also gave him a negative impression due to somephenomena such as "money worship" and "small feet" of some Chinese women. In spiteof some disappointments, he expected a perfect China with hope and confidence. In the end, the topics about literary image and cultural communication, culturalmisunderstanding and cultural uses were discussed. It is worthy to be noted that "theother" was different from its general meaning when it was used by Tagore to describeChina. So, we can get some deep thinking about the popular notions aiming at culturalcommunication.
