It is the Thunderstorm and the Great Thunderstorm that put the names of Cao Yu and Ostrovsky on the map. Although the two works originate from two different countries and date from different ages, the two share a great similarity both in structure and contents. What it is that lies beyond the great similarity is an issue worthy of further study.According to the available data and knowledge about the current status of in- and external studies on this issue, this dissertation was composed by following the principle, i.e. absorbing the essence of previous studies and trying to explore the issue from a fresh prospect. C.G. Jung's archetypal criticism theory and tragedy aesthetic theory were adopted to contrast and analyze the female images in Thunderstorm and the Great Thunderstorm, aiming to find out the fundament which the similarity of the two are laid upon, and also the similar artistic features.Besides introduction and conclusion, the dissertation is constituted of four parts, namely,Chapter 1: the contrast between the constrained circumstances Fanyi and Kajielinna, the two characters are set in, and their influences on the formation of the archetype of"Thunderstorm".Chapter 2: the contrast between the forming processes of the two"thunderstorm"characters, and the analysis on how they function in the formation of the archetype of"Thunderstorm".Chapter 3: the contrast between the two characters'emotional experiences, and the analysis on how they serve to strengthen the archetype of"Thunderstorm".Chapter 4: the contrast between the two characters'tragic endings, and the analysis on how they serve to sublime the archetype of"Thunderstorm". Conclusion: through contrast, the fundament of the similarities of the two works is found to consist in the following aspect:1 The collective unconsciousness is embodied through the same archetype of"Thunderstorm".2 Similar tragedy artistic ideas are applied to touch readers.
