Among many outstanding poets in the Tang dynasty , Jia Dao is not very distinguished as long as literary achievement is concerned . His influences on poets of later generations , however , far exceed his achievements . In the Song dynasty , Jia Dao's unique style is recognized by both people respecting him and people depreciating him , which makes him one of the great poets listing in"Cang Lang Shi Hua", a book categorizing poets according to their different styles .Early in the Northern Song dynasty , poets like"the nine monks", Kou Zhun , Pan Lang , Wei Ye and Lin Pu learned from Jia Dao from the aspect of aesthetic taste . From mid Northern Song dynasty to mid Southern Song dynasty , poets of different periods learned different things from Jia Dao , among whom Mei Yaochen ,Chen Shidao and Yang Wanli were the most famous . Late in the Southern Song dynasty , four of the most famous poets in Yongjia county and many so–called"Jianghu poets"learned from Jia Dao on the basis of similar historical background . This paper tries to draw the outline of the history of learning from Jia Dao explicitly or implicitly in the Song dynasty , taking the economy , political situation and the psychology of the literary into consideration .There were many monographs criticizing or commenting on poetry during the Song dynasty , among which over forty ones are still available today . Jia Dao was mentioned in some of those monographs such as"Liu Yi Shi Hua","Lin Han Yin Ju Shi Hua","Yun Yu Yang Qiu","Cang Lang Shi Hua"and"Shan Hu Gou Shi Hua". The paper will try to find all the relative comments on Jia Dao and then categorize them , from his life , his poetic world , his polarized style to the comparison between him and Meng Jiao , giving a general picture of Jia Dao's poems and his status in the history of literature in the eyes of poets and critics from the Song dynasty .In his book"Shi Yi Shi Shi Hua", Chen Yan ( the Qing dynasty ) argues that poetry meets its prime in three periods , that is , Kai–yuan Period and Yuan–he Period , Yuan–you Period , which he calls"three yuans". Yuan–he Period is in the Tang dynasty . Poetry of this period , however contains some basic characteristics of Song poetry . It is also one of the aims of the paper , therefore , to explore the kinship between Jia Dao's poems and Song poetry , expounding the important role of Jia Dao's poems in constructing the history of Song poetry .According to the views of reception aesthetics , the history of literature is a continuously developing process . The entailment , vlue and status of every work can only be found and established gradually with the accompaniment of readers'appreciation , interpretation and evaluation . The approaches of reception aesthetics are new to the research of classical literature . Moreover , people's research on reception history has gone out of darkness and become orientated . The paper explores the reception history of Jia Dao's poems in the Song dynasty and their poetic values , using the theoretical approaches of reception aesthetics for reference and basing the analysis on those poetry and comments on poetry which are regarded as part of reception history .
