Su Manshu is considered as the generation of "strange monk" in the Chinese history of literature. This dissertation is intended to introduce "the Marginal people"——the social psychological concept and make a whole analysis of the cultural psychological connotation which is behind Su Manshu' "strangeness". This dissertation is divided into three chapters as follows:The first chapter analyzes Su Manshu' marginal role from three angles: the blood, the role and the culture. At first, the status of illegitimate child whose blood is mixed with Chinese and Japan causes the awkwardness and the contradiction of the approval between physiological blood and cultural blood so that he has become the blood marginal people. Next, the involvement of western culture changes his traditional social role, which causes him to pace back and forth between the monk and secularization. He becomes marginal people of role. At last, the collision and the blend between the Chinese culture and the western culture cause the contradictory sentiment that makes him not only feel inferior to and proud of the traditional culture but also hate and like the western culture. Lingering between traditional culture and modem culture, he becomes marginal people of culture. The second chapter analyzes the concrete manifestation of Su Manshu' marginal role in his masterpiece On Lonely Wild Goose from the angle of the subject, novel pattern and affective tone. At first, the subject of the novel——"looking for his mother" is culturally illuminated and the performance of Su Manshu' blood marginal people can be seem from the dislocation of dramatis personae San Lang' physiological blood and cultural blood. Then, San lang' difficult transformation from traditional person to modem person is analyzed from two special phenomena, that is the warmness and the initiative of the female and the beauty of the modem female and the traditional female in Su Manshu' novel. At last, the performance of Su Manshu' cultural marginal in the novel is seem from the exotic atmosphere and the native sense in the novel both in content and in form. The third chapter analyzes the influence and significance of marginal role to Su Manshu. First of all, the negative effect is analyzed. The marginal role makes Su Manshu become non- root duckweed not only in blood but also in culture. He has no feeling of home to return. This also makes him become a contradictory individual. Wandering between the monk and secularization, he becomes the depressed person aider a long time of puzzle and exploration. Next, the positive significance to Su Manshu which the role of marginal people brings is confirmed. His development significance in history of literature is analyzed from the four aspects: the open cultural vision, the unique text shape, the bright tragedy consciousness and novel art performance.
