It has been known that Yanmen Pass, the most important one of the nine strategic passes in China, has long been a militarily contested spot and trading port of the greatest importance. It is in this historical place that a significant culture of rich historical and cultural connotation came into being. It has been still inspiring people with its immortal soul for thousands of years. Ekou Naoge is a popular form of the local art, involving some strong robust adult males support a couple of little girls or boys in costumes high over their heads with an iron bar held on their shoulders. These females walk in a procession. The show is an artistic model of the integration of dancing and music since music bands and performing teams are the integral part of the performance.So far there has not form a systematic theory for the studies of Ekou Naoge either in the literary and academic circles except for some very little documented record and rough descriptions of the performances and scenes. In2006Ekou Naoge was admitted into list of the provincial intangible cultural heritage, which marks the national recognition as the cultural essence embracing the spirit and development of China’s civilization. this thesis is attempted to make a field study of the art form from the perspective of culture, folklore and art, along with checking the history books.Set in the local Yanmen culture, the study starts from Daixian county, to which Ekou belongs to in terms of administrative division. Then there has been detailed comparison between the colorful fork customs and Ekou Naoge. Guided by the modern performance theory, the author carries out a detailed analysis on the body language and dance field formation. A more profound historical relation is also found through the study. The paper then attempts to provide a tentative development procedure for Ekou Naoge’s modern transmission, which will surely serve as a reference for the further preservation and innovative development in the future.The paper is divided into3chapters. Chapter one will be a description of Yanmen district and its related cultural flavor including Daixian County’s civil paper-cutting, dough-modeling and eight sound association.Chapter two is the main body of the analysis, which is a study of its performance system, starting from the historical background of Yanmen culture, of the body language and dance field formation.Chapter three the author concerns Ekou Naoge’s sustained development in the modern art performance and cultural exchange in light of the actual performance.
