Zen is a sect of the Chinese Buddhism. It is also the third stage ofdevelopment of the Indian Buddhism since the Indian Buddhism has beenintroduced to China. Zen's various methods of practicing embody thecontent of the moral cultivation. Practicing the Buddhism means tocultivate one's morality.This article, which centers on surpasses the Buddha founder of Zen,investigates and analyzes the great value of ethic contained in themorality and self-cultivate of Zen through studying some classics aboutZen.Zen connects the nature with the heart.It believes the nature shouldbe the nature of the bodhi. The quiet nature as this is also theself-satisfied and pure essence of life and thought to be the Buddha natureof all lives. On the basis of these theories of human nature, such as "thenature is pure", "the nature is natural", and "all lives have the nature ofBuddha", Zen thinks the individual moral cultivation should be connectedwith the individual psychology, which advocates that the foster of theindividual heart and act of the morality should join with the every day life.This theory calls people should have the quality of doing good works andpunishing bad conducts. In order to reach an ultimate state of surpassingBuddha and have the uncommon morality and personality in the everyday life to gain a free state of heart, Therefore, it proposed "self-reliantly""unconsciousness cultivation" and "the sudden enlightenment sees thenature'of the cultivated way, attempts to achieve the ultimate realmof "surpasses Buddha" and ultima(?)e good in the common custom. So Zen'stheory about moral cultivation shows the characteristics of cultivationthat are self-discipline and consciousness. The theory emphasizes a pureand natural method to practice and demands to unite the moral acts andthe moral understandings. Besides, it calls for the morality ofself-discipline which depends on the practicer's own completely.As a kind of religious ethics, Zen's view on the moral cultivation hasits own limitation. However, as a theory about the self-cultivation, it canadopt the psychology of people who live in the modern society with much intense competition and help them to have perfect their personalities. Atthe same time, it also provides great and valuable theories for adoptingthe humans relationship to promote the harmony of the society and thebuilding of universal ethics.
