Chomsky Generative Grammar Logical Analysis

It has been more than forty years since syntactic structure waspublished by Chomsky in 1957.Transformational-Generative Grammar(TG for short)has grasped a lot attention since its born, and after more thanforty-year development, with bounds of linguistics endeavor, TG hasundergone great improvements and become increasingly mature.Government and Binding theory (GB for short) is now the most perfectmodule. Logic discursion and philosophic process are important parts inlanguage using, Chomsky developed the theory by using principles of logicand the theory itself, on the other hand, is logic.The paper will first carry out its development in the whole way ongenerative grammar. "Innateness Hypothesis"(I.H. for short), proposed byChomsky, is also the foundation of his syntax theory. Universal grammarrefers to rules in forming acceptable sentences, while logic formulaindicates rules involved in propositions. So there have been greatsimilarities between them. Logic formula as law of identity, law efcontradiction and law of excluded middle are all expatiations of basicprinciples about propositions. If grammar is Innate as Chomsky claimed,what about logic formula that study propositions? Nominalism andempiricism, materialism and mentalism, which one are more forceful?These are all points worth thinking further.The first part of this paper will take philosophic and logic significanceinto account in the whole way on the theory and clarify the content of I.H.,finally will have some discussion on the origin of knowledge.Second, the paper will develop its investigation on the basis ofintroducing the moduleθ-Theory, one of the theory in Government and Binding theory. Because many of the concepts and processes inθ-Theoryinvolved a lot of principles in mathematical logic, the paper will focusdiscussion on combining these two points in introducing more details ofθ-Theory, including the concept of argument, predict and quantifier;wh-phrase movement and quantifier raising ect.
