Personality Characteristics Of Suicide Attempters, Defense Mechanisms, Coping Style Research

Objective: To exploit personality character,the defense mechanism and coping style,and study the association among them in suicide attempter with mental disorder or without mental disorder.Materials and Methods: 63 suicide attempter in emergency department and 40 employee,student in West China Hospital were selected voluntarily to participate the study. The subjects in both group were assessed with Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, defensive style questionnaire and coping style questionnaire.Result:1. The score of neuroticism was higher in suicide attempter group than in the control group (p＜0.01), and the score of extroversion was lower in suicide attempter group than in the control group (p＜0.05).2. The score of immature defense mechanism was higher in suicide attempter group than in the control group. (p＜0.013) The score of mature defense mechanism was lower in suicide attempter group than in the control group. (p＜0.01)3. Coping style The factors of solving problem and asking for help were lower in suicide attempter group than in the control group (p＜0.01).but the score of factor withdrawal was higher in suicide attempter group than in the control group. (p＜0.01)4. In suicide attempter group, extroversion was positively correlated with the coping style of solving problem and asking for help (r=0.354, r=0.351,r=0.451, p＜0.01), neuroticism was positively correlated with the immature defense mechanism and the coping style of withdrawal (r=0.376,r=0.471, p＜0.01) but was negatively correlated with the coping style of solving problem (r=-0.356, p＜0.01).Conclusion:Suicide attempters have the personality character of emotion dissteadable and trendcy of introversion, use more immature defense mechanism and adopt maladaptive coping style,and there is significant correlation among them.
