Since Panofsky studied the iconography in the 1930s, 50 years later pictures play a significant role at the internet era. The origin, the boundary, the concept and the content are regular being discussed, especially the relation between pictures and art history is mostly disputed.The international famous art historian--Horst Bredekamp developed the pictorial theory (Bildwissenshaft), which owns a leading position in the icon study today. However in the Chinese world he and his theory are rarely known.His picture (Bild) explodes the ambit between different disciplines and is of great political, economic, cultural, social significance. His pictorial theory is open and tolerant, which dose not abandon the German pictorial tradition and represent the time characteristics. Picture should be studied in a scope of thought- and cultural history.In this text I intend to present his pictorial theory, particular how he apply this to the art history. I believe that learning and sharing the advancement in the pictorial study could push our study in the art history.
