Modern Chinese Stubborn Class The Adverb Study

Modality Adverbs are comparatively complicated in its function and usage in modern Chinese. It has special individuality in the respects of semantics, syntactics, and pragmatics.This article studied Modality Adverbs Denoting "Obstinacy", regarding structuralism as the foundation, combining to borrow ideas from the theoretical research methods of grammatic alization, cognitive grammar, and functional grammar.Besides the preface and conclusion, this article studied Modality Adverbs Denoting "Obstinacy"in three parts totally.The preface of the thesis mainly summarises the achievements made by the former researchers and introduces the theories and methods, the significance of the research and the origin of the corpora used in the thesis.The first part is a study on semantic. First of all, we've explained the definition and scope of Modality Adverbs Denoting "Obstinacy". And then we conclude the sameness and differences of the semantics characteristic, and divide them into two groups. Then discussed their semantic background and in-depth semantics relations emphatically.The second part, a study on syntax analysis, is a key point. By examining their location in the sentences and characteristics of using alone, we find they are different from other modality adverbs, that is their position is not flexible . And further we've studyed study the opt to the subject and the predicate, and their distribution in sentences. On the co-occurrence features, we have studied their co-occurrence with other modality adverbs, mood particles, dynamic particle and the turning point and is trying to explain the reasons. Finally, we have a preliminary study on modality adverbs in phrases.The third part is Pragmatic analysis. Firstly we have analysed the distribution of modality adverbs in declarative,interrogative and exclamatory sentences,especially explain the reasons. Then we have revealed and analysed two important pragmatic functions, that is anti-anticipation and stressing focus.The last part sums up the conclusion of the study and meanwhile point out the weak point of this thesis.
