The lower public education and the control of the Christian thought make all the medieval images bringing a strong religious color, especially the visual arts. Bible and Christianity doctrine is the base of the visual arts. The medieval visual thoughts carry out in a series of dualistic opposition,the mind eye suppresses the physical eye. God created the world,everything in this world is God's symbol,So watching the world with a symbolic way is an inevitable choice to Christianity. People are God's creatures,but people committed original sin and alienated from God,the world's Christians focusing on the other side who despise material desires. The people have a consciousness to desire salvation of Christ and Notre Dame;And the people want to be returned to God and get eternal joy in order to reach the state of contemplation,and gain the liberation and freedom. Therefore medieval visual culture has three characteristics:symbol awareness,salvation awareness and contemplation awareness,this contrasts with current visual culture clearly. |
