Abstract/Summary:
George Eliot is the Victorian famous writer. She works with a wide range of social content and the concerns of women living in that world. Her works shows a very strong feminist consciousness. Therefore, studying for her feminist consciousness in-depth has an important significance for understanding of female writers in the creative contributions. At the same time, it has a great significance for observing the writer's feminism for thinking about women's status and future. Different from the writers of the same period, she concerns more about the social reality of women in the general state of survival. She works in the male-female discourse in the society to show their struggle posture, but they could not escape mechanism male social restraints. With the author's own aspirations, calling for understanding and sympathy of female images of the writer's works become strong needs. Through choices of different characters in different situations in Victorian era the writer's calm description reflects the powerful social forces. The freedom of women in male discourse seems just to be a myth. This thesis makes a textual analysis on her works, and attempt to reveal the writer's feminism about women's profession and family. In fact, the author'seemingly contradictory viewpoints, are affected by an implied audience and the social environment. Different from the unrealistic illusions and the inability of preaching, the author concerns women questions in a more macro perspective, and shows a high ideology. Eliot's political, occupation, marriage and family values embodied in the works, is the contradictory nature of female characters and uncertainties. Writers shape the image of women is of high moral character, or the"holy girl", or fall into dust "siren", and has always been at both ends of the moral balance. This uncertain exactly embodies writer inner thought process and the concerns of ordinary women living, embodied in the aspirations of moral ideals. Writers in the political and marriage, family and the conservative concepts did not affect her on the issue of women in the thinking and position. The female consciousness is expressed by a series of distinct women images. She shaped the images of women who fluctuated between the personal desire and ethics, releasing a unique artistic brilliance. The authors'feminism has beyond of own gender limitations of the human spirit and rose to the universal care. The writer expects men and women to establish a harmonious relationship and calls for a better emotional and friendly atmosphere appeals to the most neglected the needs of the nature of love. In addition, she reaffirms the value of neglected women, and shows deep sympathy and understanding.
