The thesis is a study of the writing techniques of Karinotsukai in Isemonogarari, one classic of Japanese literature, by comparing with Chinese Tang Dynasty Legend.Isemonogatari, a typical monogarari by unifying lyrical attributes of waka and narrative characteristic of prose, is recognized as the representative work of the utamonogatari. even though it is not unanimously accepted on who is its author and when is was produced. The work, by adopting the style of waka plus prose, depicted series of episodes including many aspects such as romance, friendship, lost travel experiences and excursion.The thesis first introduces the different annotated versions of Isemonogatari. From the systematic collection of uikouburihon the author choose tenpukuhon in authentic teikahon as its study object. Different from the "growth theory'" of Isemonogatari, the author intend to explore Karinotsukai from the universal unification of the whole work rather than classifying the episode into the creation of a special phase.Karinotsukai relates a romance story: a man, as a karinotsukai, was assigned on a mission to a place called isenokuni, where he had a one-night-passion with a maid serving as a saiguu. But finally their love ended woefully. On one hand, by comparing the related kashuu. the author found 7 unique writing characteristics in the creation of Karinotsukai; on the other hand, in light of the previous relevant study, another comparison is conducted between the subject and two short stories Yingying Zhuang and YouXianKu in Chinese Tang Dynasty Legend. It is found that there are 9 aspects in Karinotsukai influenced by the Tang Dynasty Legend and 3 differences in the narrating aspect. Based on the preceding comparison, the author analyzes the writing techniques of Karinotsukai from the perspective of utamonogatari. ventures into that many writing techniques in ancient Chinese literature are adopted flexibility in Karinotsukai for highlighting essence of waka and confirms its significance from the perspective of fiction.The thesis is composed of six parts as follows:Introduction illustrates the significance of the topic and the study methods.Chapter One serves as an introduction of Isemonogatari, in which the current studies on its various versions are generalized.Chapter Two is a comparative study of the Karinotsukai and kashuu.Chapter Three is the kernel part of the whole thesis, in which the influence of Tang Dynasty Legend on Karinotsukai is explored.Chapter Four summarizes the wiring techniques in Karinotsukai in light of the previous comparison.Conclusion iterates the study and points out the future task for its further study.
